Our policy

St John’s Art Department aims to offer an art education for all pupils. This includes pupils who have a particular gift and interest in this subject and also those who do not intend to take Art as a Matriculation subject. The aim of our programme is to contribute to all pupils’ general enrichment.

Art as a matriculation subject

While we feel that the development of basic skills is extremely important in art, we find that art develops pupils’ problem-solving skills as well as lateral thinking. In the words of Marcel Duchamp, we believe that art is “brain food.”

When our pupils reach their final year, they will have been exposed to drawing and painting in a variety of media, sculpture and printmaking. As part of the art course we teach computer graphics, working with Photoshop, Corel Draw and Flash. Pupils can choose to specialise and further their skills in one or more of the above disciplines.

As extra-murals we offer all of these disciplines. There is extra-mural art every day of the week.

Part of our art course takes the form of Art History and Visual Culture, where pupils are taught to analyse art works and to understand them in a historical and cultural context.

We conduct an annual art tour to Europe and hold several exhibitions each year, including the St John’s inter-schools annual Matric Art Exhibition which we display in a prestigious public gallery, and our Major Art Exhibition held in October.

Senior pupils are taken on a regular basis to view local art exhibitions in Gauteng – a very enriching experience.

Many of our pupils excel in art and follow one of the many avenues of art-related careers.
