St John's College, in association with FNB Private Clients, hosted the eight annual International Schools' Golf Tournament from 17 to 20 August 2011 at Sun City. The main objectives of the tournament are to raise the profile of golf at school level and to afford South African schools the opportunity of competing in an international arena.
At the official opening ceremony of this year's Tournament, held in the Hall of Treasures at Sun City, deputy headmaster Martin Huysamer welcomed team members from 32 participating schools. He reminded players of their enormous privilege to be playing on two of the country's most magnificent golf courses. He encouraged the boys to make most of the opportunity, striving to give of their best and representing their schools with pride. FNB Private Clients were thanked for their ongoing support, for the fifth year in succession.
This year's field was made up of 31 Southern African teams with one international school participating. The tournament was played over four days on two of the country's top courses - the Gary Player and Lost City golf courses. The competition comprised teams of four boys, 18 years or younger, who all played off scratch handicaps. Teams comprised four scholars playing combined betterball stableford on the first two days and individual stableford on the last two days, with three scores to count for the team total.
At the prize-giving dinner, Mr Eric Enslin CEO of FNB Private Clients, expressed his pleasure to once again welcome talented young golfers, accompanied by their coaches, to this annual tournament. He encouraged participants to emulate the commitment and dedication of explorer, Sir Ernest Shackleton, who so magnificently succeeded in his Antarctic expeditions. Mr Enslin said that Sir Shackleton was a perfect leadership role model who set goals, was self-motivated and who in extreme circumstances, kept his team together to accomplish a survival story.
Mr Eric Enslin congratulated TUKS Sport High School who won on a count out with Hoërskool Waterkloof, both finishing with an overall score of 345 points. King Edward VII were placed third with a score of 337 followed by St Stithians Boys College who scored 331 points.
In summing up, the tournament Director, Adrian Norris, said that the quality of golf played was once again outstanding. He expressed his gratitude to Sun City Resorts for hosting the tournament on courses of a traditionally high standard and re-iterated that without FNB Private Clients' very generous sponsorship, it would not be possible to host this annual tournament. He paid tribute to the many staff members from participating schools who had accompanied and supported their respective schools saying that their commitment to the development of the game of golf at their schools is to be commended.
