Mike Workman sadly leaving St John's

Dear St John’s Community

It is with a deep sense of sadness that we inform you that yesterday, Mr Mike Workman, Head of the Preparatory School, informed the Headmaster of the College that he had been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. Mike asked to be relieved of his duties as Headmaster from the end of this term. It is with a great sense of shock, and of compassion for Mike, Cindy, Murray and Michaela that we received this news.

Mike has served St John’s Preparatory School as Head for thirteen years. He is a compassionate and kind man who has had enormous support from his staff. His leadership has ensured that St John’s Prep is an excellent preparatory school. We acknowledge with appreciation his role, and want to assure him of our support during this very difficult time.

Mrs Margo Long and Mr Patrick Lees will lead the school during his absence, until we are able to appoint a new Head. They will report to the Headmaster of the College. We are confident of their leadership and believe that the Prep School will be in very good hands.

Mike speaks with anguish about this decision and about the sense of loss he has in stepping down from his leadership position. He expressed his love for St John’s and reflected on the many happy years he has spent here.

On behalf of the whole St John’s community we want to assure him of our love and support. He has acted in good faith for the sake of his deteriorating health, and ultimately for the good of the school. In consultation with the Council Executive and the Bishop of Johannesburg, it has been agreed that Mike should be granted long leave and that we support his application to be medically boarded due to his ill health.

We will find appropriate ways to thank him for his service to St John’s.

Yours sincerely

Roger Cameron   Vuyo Kahla
Headmaster   Chairman: Council of St John’s College
