Every now and then in life you discover a treasure – it might be a special relationship; it might be a sacred place; it might be a school.
It is my hope that you will discover here at St John’s many treasures – fine friends; creative and innovative teaching and learning; sound values; fine traditions; and a faith that will enable you to meet the challenges of life.
We are essentially a boys’ school from Grade 0 – Grade 12 (Upper 5), writing the National Senior Certificate through the Independent Examinations Board. In our 6th Form, girls and boys write the Cambridge A-Level examinations. Academic excellence, not only in achieving superb results in final examinations, but also in supporting those who struggle academically, is a characteristic of St John’s.
If you were to stand in the beautiful quadrangles and watch the comings and goings of the boys, you would see a sense of purpose, energy, and an enthusiasm. The boys are passionately proud of their school and have a great sense of belonging. This leads to a community spirit where boys, girls, teachers, parents, and old boys have an identity as Johannians. They are proud of their heritage and show respect for the diversity that makes up this community.
We are a Christian school and the Anglican tradition informs our daily worship in the chapel and the activities of the day. We honour our Lord Jesus Christ in the Christian tradition of our founding fathers and seek to serve Him through the full life of St John’s College. However we admit boys and girls of other faiths, showing respect to those traditions.
We are a school that defines its identity in Africa, honours our roots in this land and the heritage we have received from England. We seek to produce leaders who are ‘rightly trained in body, mind and character’ who will go out from St John’s ready ‘to serve God in Church and State’.
There is a wonderful rhythm to a good school; a sense of delight and a generosity of spirit. It is a colourful, busy place with loads of energy. St John’s has a rich curriculum, both inside and outside of the classroom, and I invite you to come and visit us, and in a sense see for yourself the treasure that is this great and beautiful school.
