Cultural: The Chess Club

Chess at the Prep School is a thriving activity. Currently there are about 70 boys who participate in the chess club with two teams participating in the league.

St John’s organise and host a Supper League which takes place on Monday evenings and involves fourteen teams. Each team comprises 8 Juniors and 8 Seniors, excluding the reserves. Our boys are trained by external coaches who have played chess at a provincial and national level. Practices are held every Monday afternoon from 15h00 to 16h30 and matches from 17h00 to 18h30 which includes a delicious dinner at the college hostel.

We encourage as many boys as possible to join the Chess Club – it stimulates the brain and valuable lessons are learned in lateral thinking and strategising.  Boys will benefit tremendously from participating in this cultural activity.
