St John’s organise and host the Supper League which takes place on Monday evenings and involves fourteen teams. Each team (A and B) comprises 12 Juniors and 12 Seniors, including the reserves. Our coach is Brett McLoughlin, a former provincial player and a parent at the Prep School. The teams are thriving under his able direction. Practices are held every Monday afternoon and on Friday mornings before school. Boys may challenge for positions during breaks.
Eric McLoughlin, Sachin Modi, Matthew Adams, Chris Burke and Matthew Berger all play for the Gauteng squad. Special mention must be made of Sachin (Lower II) who holds Junior Springbok Colours for Chess and who is participating in the World Championships again this year.
We encourage as many boys as possible to join the Chess Club – it is stimulates the brain and valuable lessons are learned in lateral thinking and strategising.
