Cultural: The Reading Club
At St John’s Prep reading is a way of life. Almost every boy has a book with him at any given time. The well-resourced Library allows books to be taken out anytime during the school day.

During the school week time is set aside for silent reading and often when work is completed in class many of the boys sit quietly absorbed in their latest read.

The Library aims to provide reading material for boys at any reading level. In addition, those who struggle with reading have full support from the Academic Support teacher who has a selection of books that encourage fluency and reading confidence.

For every 1000 pages read, boys are awarded bronze, silver or gold reading certificates. If a boy reads over 5000 pages, he achieves an “Extreme Explorer’s” certificate.

The “Readers are Leaders” computerised reading programme is used extensively throughout the Prep to reinforce the habit of reading and to improve comprehension and language skills.

Book sales, “Hooked on Books” performances, visiting authors and storytellers, a “Family Literary Quiz” and participation in the annual “Kids Lit Quiz” give reading a high-profile in the school and foster an on-going interest in this essential life skill.
