St John's College

On Thursday 11 July, around 30 of us from the “Class of ’84” gathered at the school to celebrate 40 years since matric. Not surprisingly, we are now scattered across the globe and people travelled from Australia, UK, USA, Switzerland, Italy, the Azores and various places in SA.

The day started for some with a lunch in Darragh Hall and a walking tour of the school - Pre-Prep, Prep and College - hosted by two current pupils. Many of us started in the Pre-Prep in the 70s and were pleased to see some of the old buildings still standing! The main event was a lamb-on-the-spit braai at the Old Johannian Club, where we were joined by the Head Master and former teachers Cliff and Madeleine Midgley, Paul Edey and Kate Byrne. “Classmate Craig Owen also provided a photo booth, which was a lot of fun!

Around 10 die-hards stayed on for the formal OJA dinner on Friday and Gaudy Day on Saturday, where we whiled away a very pleasant afternoon reminiscing and drinking beer on the Burger field. We also drank a toast to the memory of our Head Boy, Adrian Walton, who sadly passed away just before our reunion.
