St John's College

We are pleased to announce that the 15th St John’s College Basketball Tournament will be held at the St John’s College Basketball Courts from 2 to 5 September, proudly sponsored by Standard Bank and brought to you by SuperSport Schools in association with PUMA and Shesha Hoops Lounge.

The 2021 St John’s College Basketball Tournament is a non-spectator event. No family, friends or fans will be allowed to attend as per the COVID-19 protocols gazetted by the Department of Basic Education. Please follow our games on the SuperSport Schools app or via our social media platforms.

The St John’s College Basketball Tournament has been a highlight on the boys’ school basketball calendar for the past 15 years. The Tournament, traditionally a four day festival of fun for the whole family, was postponed earlier this year due to COVID-19. We are delighted to be able to host it now from 2 to 5 September, albeit in a non- spectator capacity, so that our boys can enjoy some of the friendly competition they have sorely missed.

While we can’t have our families and friends with us at the courts, we are pleased to be able to live-stream the games from two of our three courts to our fans across South Africa and the world through our partnership with SuperSport Schools. The SuperSport Schools app is available for download in the iOS and Google Play stores free of charge. If you can't download the app, register to watch the games online at www.supersportschools.com

The competition format includes a round-robin phase with top sides going on to play in the knockout stages and 32 participating teams across the U19, U15 and U13 age-group categories.

There is plenty of exciting court-side action to look forward to over the four days. The Tournament features predominantly local schools with some inter-provincial visitors joining us from Mangaung, Kwazulu Natal and Makhanda. We are excited to welcome our returning teams as well as some newcomers to the courts, including The Hill High School, The King’s School Linbro Park, Rand Tutorial College, Redhill School, Boys & Girls Club SA, Phoenix Basketball Club and Tip-Offs Viking’s Basketball Club.

“There has been little school sports competition available to our boys over the past year, and so to be able to have these teams come together to enjoy the game of basketball is a privilege. I am always in awe of the depth in talent South Africa has, and all age groups categories promise competitive games to our viewers at home,” says Mrs Ngoza Phiri-Mazarura, MiC of Basketball at St John’s College.

Tournaments of this nature would not be possible without the support of our sponsors. St John’s College is proud to partner with brands conscious of the value that sport adds to our communities.

Our headline partner for the 2021 St John’s College Basketball Tournament is Standard Bank, whose contribution to the development of sporting programmes continues to help elevate the role of sports in Africa’s story.

“Standard Bank thanks St John’s for the opportunity to assist with the St John’s College 2021 St Basketball Tournament. As a bank sponsorship in both arts and sport are essential and this is a valuable part of our social responsibility journey. We wish the players all the best,” says Lindy-Lou Alexander, Head, B&M Consumer & High Net Worth Client Segment, Standard Bank.

Our partnership with SuperSport Schools has allowed us to stream these games live to our friends and families worldwide during this non-spectator event, ensuring that nobody misses out on the action.

PUMA and SHESHA Hoops Lounge have also joined our Tournament this year. PUMA brings its signature sense of style to the Tournament with its fusion of street and court wear. PUMA has a well-established presence on the international sports stage and is a growing favourite among professional basketball players.

We wish the players, coaches, managers, officials – and spectators at home – a terrific weekend of competitive basketball and trust that our boys will build many friendships, hone their skills, and compete keenly on the court.

Please download the SuperSport Schools app to enjoy the games live from home.
