St John's College

Welcome to the 2022 St John’s College Basketball Tournament, proudly sponsored by Standard Bank and brought to you by SuperSport Schools, from 24 to 27 February 2022.

The St John’s College Basketball Tournament has been a highlight on the boys’ school basketball calendar for the past 16 years.

Tickets are R50 and will be sold at the Pre-Prep gate. Please note, spectator numbers will be limited due to the current COVID-19 restrictions in place.

Games will also be live-streamed to our supporters at home free of charge via the SuperSport Schools app. Simply register on the SuperSport Schools website and watch the games on your computer, or download the app to your device in the App Store or Google Play.

The competition format includes a round-robin phase with top sides going on to play in the knockout stages and 55 participating teams across the U19, U15 and U13 age-group categories.

There is plenty of exciting court-side action to look forward to over the four days. The Tournament features predominantly local schools with some inter-provincial visitors joining us from the Eastern Cape, Free State, Kwazulu Natal, North West and Western Cape. We are excited to welcome our returning teams and our newcomers to the courts.

“COVID-19 has stolen so much from us, and we are delighted to be inviting some of our great South African schools to compete in this premier boys’ school basketball tournament,” says Mr Stuart West, Executive Headmaster at St John’s College.

“There are many valuable character-building lessons to be learned on the courts -- passion, commitment, hard work, perseverance and dealing with success or disappointment graciously. We encourage our players to commit to good sportsmanship and fair play throughout the Tournament as we celebrate the new friendships made this weekend as we engage in keen competition and healthy rivalry.”

Tournaments of this nature would not be possible without the support of our sponsors. St John’s College is proud to partner with brands conscious of the value that sport adds to our communities.

Our headline partner for the 2022 St John’s College Basketball Tournament is Standard Bank, whose contribution to developing sporting programmes continues to help elevate the role of sports in Africa’s story.

“Standard Bank thanks St John’s for the opportunity to assist with the 2022 St John’s College Basketball Tournament. As a bank, sponsorship in both arts and sport is essential, which is a valuable part of our social responsibility journey. We wish the players all the best,” says Lindy-Lou Alexander, Head, B&M Consumer & High Net Worth Client Segment, Standard Bank.

Our partnership with SuperSport Schools has allowed us to stream these games live to our friends and families worldwide, ensuring that nobody misses out on the action.

“The Basketball Committee has worked tirelessly in the planning of this event, and I would like to thank the Chairman Mr Jameson Hlongwane and his team of parents for their enormous effort in supporting basketball at St John’s College. I would also like to thank our staff for their time, expertise and commitment to the tournament,” said Mr West.

Please keep an eye on our action shots from each game of the day in the gallery on our website - these are available for our fans and families to download free of charge.

We wish the players, coaches, managers, officials and spectators - whether at the courts or at home – a terrific weekend of competitive basketball and trust that our boys will build many friendships, hone their skills, and compete keenly on the court.
