St John's College

Thomas Kruger achieved an average of 92.7% and eight distinctions in Afrikaans FAL, English Home Language, History, Information Technology, Life Orientation, Mathematics and Physical Sciences, as well as Further Studies Mathematics Extended.

He was included on the IEB Outstanding Achievements list, achieving within the top 5% of candidates in six or more subjects, including Life Orientation and featured in the top 1% of candidates per subject in Information Technology and Physical Sciences.

Looking back at his time at St John’s, Thomas says: “I was lucky enough to meet some incredible people, both students and teachers, who made my time here special. I want to thank all the school staff for everything they do for us as students. So much of what they have done for me and others extends beyond just teaching us the subject material, and we are truly fortunate to have been able to experience this.”

Thomas’s proudest academic achievements at St John’s were earning his Academic Honours and securing a high mark for his History research task in matric. His fondest memories are of the Lower IV (Grade 9) Wilderness School at Maretlwane and everyday interactions with classmates, break-time and classroom discussions and “general messing around”.

Thomas will attend UCT this year to begin his studies towards an electrical and computer engineering degree.

His advice to younger students would be not to take themselves too seriously. “Be open to experiencing new things and new people. Don’t get too stuck in your ways too early, and keep an open mind.”
