St John's College has concluded the highly anticipated 19th Basketball Tournament, brought to you by Standard Bank in association with Avis, an exceptional display of talent at the biggest boys’ school basketball tournament in Southern Africa.
The tournament, which ran from 22 to 25 February, featured an impressive lineup of 62 teams hailing from Gauteng, Eastern Cape, Free State KwaZulu Natal, as well as from our neighbouring eSwatini and Zimbabwe.
The competition was intense as the U15 and U19 age-group categories made their way through the group stages while the U13s played a festival format, with no winners or losers, just enjoying lots of play.
“As the juniors look at the giants of the U19s, we hope that this one day inspires them to become giants themselves,” said Tony Johnson, MIC Basketball at St John’s Preparatory.
The finals saw another Gauteng vs Kwazulu Natal clash. St John’s College went down to Hilton in the U15 final with a score of 36 - 47, and Northwood School faced King Edward VII School in the U19 age group, yielding a 85 - 43 result.
A surprise guest performance by Nasty C, a well-known South African rapper, saw him performing some of his hits on Court 1 before the U19 final, to the delight of the crowds.
“It’s been an incredible tournament with a show of incredible sportsmanship throughout the weekend, demonstrating the positive impact of healthy rivalry and fair play as new connections were fostered among the participants,” said Stuart West, St John’s College Executive Headmaster. “We are incredibly proud of all the teams involved and extend a huge congratulations to everyone for their outstanding achievements,” said Stuart West.
Tournaments like these would not be possible without the support of our partners. Thank you to our headline sponsor, Standard Bank, for joining us at the courts, along with AVIS and SuperSport Schools.
