SANITZER, DUNKS AND LAY UPS
The 2021 St John’s College Basketball Tournament, proudly sponsored by Standard Bank and brought to you by Supersport Schools in association with PUMA and SHESHA Hoops Lounge, is underway. The tournament, which usually takes place earlier in the year but was postponed due to COVID-19, is back from 2 to 5 September as a non-spectator event.Â
Day One of the Tournament tipped off yesterday with strict Covid-19 protocols being observed by players, coaches and staff throughout the day. Unfortunately, there were no spectators cheering for their teams at the courts, which felt a bit strange, but our partnership with SuperSport Schools brought the action to our families, friends and fans at home.Â
Some impressive basketball was played throughout the day with the games tightly contested. The Katlehong Bulls showed their grit as they managed to grind out a narrow 22-18 win over St Benedict’s. Another standout performance came from Pretoria Boys High School U/19’s when they managed a 27-18 result over Michael Mount Waldorf School. The Soweto Academy U/19’s were also in fine form managing to topple King Edward VII School with a 33-19 score late in the day.
The St John’s College teams were definitely on form recording an impressive 100% win rate across the U/13, U/15 and U/19 age group during the day. What made this feat even more notable was that the College’s U/14 team is participating in the U/15 age group and yet still managed to emerge victorious at the end of the day’s play. It was an incredible showing throughout the age groups, bringing to the forefront the hard work that takes place behind the scenes.Â
The St John’s U/19 squad played only one fixture yesterday but were relentless in their performance, steamrolling a resilient St Peter’s College team 66-12.Â
We look forward to another day of watching these young men coming together to do what they love most – playing basketball.
