A DAY OF NAIL-BITING MATCHUPS, AS THE ROUND ROBIN PHASE OF THE TOURNAMENT CONTINUESÂ
The 2021 St John’s College Basketball Tournament, proudly sponsored by Standard Bank and brought to you by Supersport Schools in association with PUMA and SHESHA Hoops Lounge, enjoyed a successful second day with some teams experiencing some unfortunate, narrow defeats and others well-deserved victories, ensuring another fantastic day of play at the courts.
The day presented a few surprises which made it difficult to pick any outright winners. Still, the teams were determined, putting in big shifts with the tussles played in fairness and camaraderie. Again, strict Covid-19 protocols were in place and followed by all.
The round-robin fixtures continued on Day 2 of the Tournament. The tone was set early in the day as the games got underway, with the teams pushing each other right until the end.Â
St John’s College disrupted their Day 1 winning streak when the U13 Prep side lost 35-28 to the well-coached Michael Mount Waldorf School side. The St John’s U/19 outfit continued with their great results claiming a massive 87-03 win over The Kings School Linbro Park and a nail-biting 35-31 victory over old rivals St Alban’s College in the last clash. The Tournament also got its first draw between the U/19 Katlehong Bulls and Michael Mount Waldorf School (14-14).
Other outstanding performances included Pretoria Boys High School earning fine victories over the Soweto Academy (20-14) and Katlehong Bulls (33-28) in the U/15 and U/19 age groups, respectively. The greatest upset of the day came from the U/19 Soweto Academy side, who left St Stithians College with their hands on their heads with a 40-36 win. The Soweto Academy was impressive in their 33-39 win over St John’s College in the U/15 category.Â
Catch all the action again from as early as 8am where some teams will have a last chance at qualifying for the knockout phase of the competition. Be sure to catch it all live on the Supersport Schools app or online at www.supersportschools.com
