THE TOURNAMENT PROGRESSES TO THE KNOCKOUT PHASE, AFTER THE LAST ROUND OF POOL GAMES
The 2021 St John’s College Basketball Tournament, proudly sponsored by Standard Bank and brought to you by Supersport Schools in association with Puma and SHESHA Hoops Lounge, saw a fantastic day of basketball played out on Day 3.
The last round-robin games were played in the earlier part of the day before the tallying of scores and arrangement of pool logs across the age groups saw teams qualifying for the quarter-final and knockout stages of the competition.  Â
The games continued to be competitive and tensions ran high on the courts with some teams playing two matches on the day which was physically and mentally demanding as the competition reached an important stage.Â
St John’s College was again victorious seeing all teams entered into the tournament qualifying for the quarter final stage. The U/14 St John’s team that participated in the U/15 age group was knocked out of the tournament by an impressive Mangaung Knights outfit with a score of 42-35. The rest of the St John’s teams progressed to the semifinals to be played out on finals day. The quarter finals were exciting, featuring plenty of strong competitors across the age groups.Â
In the U/15s, St Stithians, St John’s, Mangaung Knights and the Soweto Academy progressed to the semifinals. The U/19 category saw St Charles knock out previous tournament winners St Stithians (28-22), in the ‘battle of the saints’, with the other successful sides including St Alban’s, St John’s and the Soweto Academy.Â
Catch all the action again tomorrow from as early as 8 am when teams give it one last push for silverware on finals day. Be sure to catch it all live on the Supersport Schools app and Supersport, which you can download or go through a registration process on www.supersportschools.com.
