Swimming takes place in the first and third terms and we have an A and a B Team. Galas are held on Friday afternoons and take the form of relays. In order to get into the team, boys challenge other boys on the ladder.

At St John’s, we believe that swimming is a life skill and that it is our duty to ensure that every boy becomes a confident and capable swimmer.

During the Easter and Michaelmas terms, one of the two class PE lessons is spent in the swimming pool where we work on strokes, speed, endurance and racing technique. During the Easter term, every boy is expected to swim in the Inter-house Tabloid Gala. In the Michaelmas term, the Championship Gala is held and, although this gala is where the best swimmers are given the opportunity to compete for the coveted Junior and Senior Victor Ludorum trophies, there are also house races where every boy represents his house.

Our big swimming team particpates in the A25 and B25 swimming leagues and galas are swum on Friday afternoons. The team is a dynamic one where swimmers move between the two leagues depending on their times at the previous gala.

Swimmers are expected to attend at least one of the two early morning training sessions and the afternoon team swimming pratice where they are able to challenge their peers for a spot in the team. Boys need not be a member of the team to attend these practices.

  • All boys are to have a swimming costume whether they are in the team or not.
  • Full tracksuits are to be worn to all galas, with tackies or slops and a team cap.
