The Academy Class of 2024

St John’s College Academy celebrates the successful matric results for the Class of 2024 despite a challenging start to their high school careers under the shadow of the pandemic.

“Our Academy students have responded well, staying the course and giving a commendable account of their talents,” said Mr Mickey Mashego, Head of the Academy and Community Engagement at St John’s College.

A total of 23 Academy students wrote the National Senior Certificate (NSC) exams, with 22 passing and 21 achieving a Bachelor’s Degree pass. The cohort collectively earned 19 distinctions and 30 B symbols.

Five students wrote the Further Studies Mathematics examinations, with all five passing. Genius Mogale and Livingston Katinga achieved distinctions. “Thank you to Mrs Kim Jacobs from the College Maths department for her tireless dedication to teaching these Academy Further Studies Mathematics students,” said Mr Stuart West, Executive Headmaster.

Among the top achievers was Genius Mogale from Barnato Park High School (BPHS), who earned four distinctions, including one in Further Studies Mathematics. Orarabetse Moeketsi from Highlands North Boys High School (HNBHS) secured three distinctions, including one in Mathematics. Livingston Katinga (BPHS), Khanya Ntshalintshali (HNBHS), Asive Kwatshana (BPHS), Andile Ngubane (BPHS), and Bonga Malinga (HNBHS) each earned two distinctions.

“I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to all the teachers, coaches, tutors, parents, and admin staff who have supported these students throughout their journey, inside and outside the classroom,” said Mr Mashego. “Their successes are a culmination of your selfless commitment and personal mentorship.”

We congratulate the St John’s College Academy Class of 2024 on their achievements and wish them all the best as they embark on the next chapter of their academic journeys.

The St John's Academy programme enriched my academic and personal growth. Mrs Jacobs' guidance helped me navigate Further Studies Mathematics, and the supportive Academy community fostered discipline and motivation. I am proud of my matric results, which secured my admission to Wits University to study Accounting Science and pursue my goal of becoming a Chartered Accountant. I am grateful to St John's College and Mr Mashego for their support.

I enjoyed privileges many of my peers would envy, including extra lessons, Further Studies subjects, outstanding teachers, and comprehensive school support such as uniforms, lunches, and a wide range of activities like cycling and swimming.

The St John's College Academy

The St John’s College Academy is an after-school enrichment programme promoting excellence in Mathematics, Physical Science, English and Life Skills. Started in 2008, the Academy serves boys attending under-resourced schools in our neighbouring communities of Yeoville, Berea and beyond. The academic programme offers after-school supplementary teaching and support on the St John’s campus.

Due to a very clear need and the positive impact seen, the Academy grew quickly in its early years to accommodate students in Grades 10, 11 and 12, for a total of 72 students in the College. In 2019, the programme was extended to include Grades 6 and 7 in the critical preparatory phase. In 2023, the College Academy programme was extended to include a supplementary phase, where Grade 9 students are supported by intern teachers at their own schools. This helps to bridge the gap between the Prep Academy and the College Academy.
