St John's College

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Hilton Stander, beloved husband, father, grandfather, schoolmaster, pastor, and friend to many. Hilton passed away peacefully on 29 July, 2025, surrounded by his family in KwaZulu-Natal.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Dot, and his four children, Shane, Regan, Lee, and Kerry, as well as his cherished grandchildren, all of whom brought immense joy and pride to his life.

Mr Stander served as Second Master at St John’s Preparatory School from 1989 to 1993, where he left an indelible mark on the hearts and minds of all who knew him. Fondly remembered as a “Mr Chips” figure, his classrooms were filled with both laughter and profound learning. He was a generous and empathetic schoolmaster, always willing to offer his time, wisdom, and counsel to any boy or colleague in need. He was a favourite among the staff, not only for his warmth and humour but for his deep insight into life and education.

A gifted storyteller with a light-hearted spirit, Hilton had the ability to lift a room with his presence. He lived selflessly, always putting others before himself, not for recognition, but because that was simply who he was.

Following his time at St John’s, Mr Stander went on to serve as Headmaster of Thomas More College, Oakhill College, and Holy Family College. He also played a key role in establishing and leading the New Life Academy of Learning and Leadership. Committed to service, he gave generously of his time to the less fortunate and was actively involved with the Angel of Wings Foundation.

Hilton’s legacy lives on in the countless lives he touched. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, August 8, 2025, in Durban. Further details will be shared in due course.
