Cheyenne Paxton (Fleming 2022) has made remarkable strides in the world of debating since leaving St John’s College. Although Cheyenne only began debating in matric, the experience provided a springboard for a journey that has quickly reached international heights.
Now a student at the University of the Witwatersrand, Cheyenne has become an active member of the Wits Debating Union, while also giving back by judging St John’s school debates and coaching at Radford High School.
This dedication recently culminated in a major achievement: winning the Southern African Universities Debating Championship (SAUDC), the region’s premier debating competition, alongside partner Nakita Singh. Cheyenne also earned the title of Best Speaker of the Tournament, a testament to exceptional skill and growth in the sport.
Looking ahead, Cheyenne will represent Wits at the World Universities Debating Championship (WUDC) in Sofia, Bulgaria. With this milestone on the horizon, Cheyenne is eager to connect with the broader Old Johannian community and explore opportunities to engage with fellow alumni.
From starting as a first-time debater at St John’s to becoming one of Southern Africa’s top university debaters, Cheyenne’s journey is a proud reflection of the foundation built at St John’s, and a story that continues to inspire.
