Old Johannians gathered for An Evening with Dale Jackson to mark the beginning of a new chapter at St John’s College. The event provided an opportunity to connect with Dale Jackson as he steps into his role as 17th Executive Headmaster and to engage with the future direction of St John’s College. Secondary benefits of the event included the opportunity for Old Johannians to connect with one another and the broader St John’s College leadership, strengthen their connection to the school, and the development of an aligned partnership amongst stakeholders throughout the St John’s College community.
The evening was structured around a wide ranging set of questions where Brett Tucker (Clayton 1997) asked about leadership, academics, sport, faith, and community, all of which were addressed with clarity, and insight.
In responding to questions on the identity of St John’s College, Dale spoke about what distinguishes the school among leading institutions and where he hopes to see it by the end of his tenure. He acknowledged both the opportunities and pressures that come with strong traditions, emphasising the need for thoughtful evolution in a rapidly changing educational landscape. He also addressed financial sustainability and shared his priorities for his first 90 days, outlining the support required from the community to ensure early success.
Academic excellence featured prominently in the discussion. Dale reaffirmed St John’s position as one of South Africa’s strongest academic boys’ schools, while addressing perceptions around academic pressure and students wellbeing. He spoke convincingly about maintaining high standards, supporting students, and ensuring that excellence and wellbeing are not seen as competing priorities.
Sport was another key focus of the evening. Dale addressed concerns around performance, participation, and balance, particularly in relation to rugby and hockey. He outlined a clear vision for sport as a pillar of school spirit, belonging, and personal development, while acknowledging the need to rebuild performance, strengthen recruitment and development pathways, and improve exposure and fixtures at both Prep and College level.
The role of the Anglican foundation of the school was discussed openly. Dale confirmed its continued importance in shaping morality, ethics, and identity, while thoughtfully engaging with questions around inclusion, faith, and maintaining the school’s Christian character in a diverse community.
Questions around community, belonging, discipline, and social responsibility were also addressed with care. Dale spoke about strengthening service, humility, and school spirit, enforcing discipline fairly and consistently, retaining outstanding teachers, and positioning St John’s as a globally relevant school that remains deeply connected to South Africa.
Throughout the evening, Dale Jackson demonstrated a deep understanding of the complexities facing St John’s College and answered the questions with honesty, balance, and respect for the school’s heritage. The discussion left attendees encouraged and confident in the leadership ahead.
We thank all Old Johannians and the guests who participated in this important conversation, both in person and online, and look forward to the journey ahead under Dale Jackson’s leadership.
