St John's College

St John's Sixth Form is expanding with the introduction of a Cambridge IGCSE Levels from January 2027. This is a deliberate evolution of the Sixth Form's academic offering, strengthening the school's position as a centre of excellence while remaining firmly rooted in the traditions of St John's.

The IGCSE Levels creates a clear academic pathway into the Sixth Form's established AS and A Level programmes. This ensures students transition from their foundational years with confidence.

The decision to introduce the IGCSE Levels reflects the belief that education should develop character and purpose alongside academic achievement. By adopting the IGCSE Levels framework, the Sixth Form provides a curriculum recognised globally for encouraging critical thinking.

"The jump from the standard curriculum to A Levels can be significant," says Mr Paul Emant, Head of Sixth Form. "Introducing the IGCSE Levels allows us to create a smoother, three-year journey. It gives our students a stronger foundation and the academic confidence to handle the rigour of an international qualification."

The programme balances academic excellence with a broad framework for co-curricular involvement. As a co-educational environment, the Sixth Form invites all students to engage fully in the life of St John's through sport and culture. This ensures their education remains well-rounded.

This expansion is supported by the development of dedicated Sixth Form facilities. These spaces are designed to support the community and scholarship that define the Sixth Form experience. They will also provide the environment for the independent study required for success in the Cambridge system.

About St John's Sixth Form

St John's Sixth Form is a co-educational centre of academic excellence. It offers a specialised international route where both young men and women sit their examinations through Cambridge International Education. Our graduates consistently achieve exceptional results and gain entry to top universities in South Africa and abroad.

The Sixth Form is a distinct part of the broader St John's community, providing the Cambridge curriculum alongside the College's respected IEB curriculum. These parallel routes ensure that St John's students have access to the world's most prestigious universities, with both pathways grounded in the same standards of academic excellence and character that define St John's.

From 2027, there will be three entry options for St John's Sixth Form:

  • Post-Matric: One-year accelerated A Levels course.
  • Post-Upper IV (Grade 10): Two-year AS Levels (Year 1) and A Level (Year 2) courses.
