357 distinctions from 126 students; six or more distinctions achieved by 22% of the class

Stuart West, Executive Headmaster at St John’s College, says these achievements would be exceptional under any circumstances – let alone a year so severely affected by the coronavirus pandemic. The St John’s matric students drew heavily on their developed resilience, disciplined work ethic and confidence to problem-solve on their own to achieve excellent results across the board.

“This exceptional academic achievement is the result of dedication, application and hard work from the students underpinned by the unwavering support, commitment and care from our devoted teaching staff.

“We salute the matric class of 2020, and their teachers, on truly outstanding results and celebrate another year in the legacy of academic excellence at St John’s College.”

Of the 126 St John’s College boys who wrote the matric exams, seven achieved an average of at least 90% (5.6% of the class). An average of at least 80% was achieved by 46 boys (more than a third of the matric class), while 64 boys achieved an average of at least 75% (more than half of the class). Six or more distinctions were achieved by 22% of the St John’s College Class Of 2020.

Mathematics had a 92.1% uptake and nearly 80% of the 116 boys who wrote the Mathematics exam achieved a mark of more than 65%, with almost half of all the Maths class achieving a distinction. 45% of St John’s students wrote AP Maths, and a quarter of the AP Maths class achieved a distinction.

Of the 105 out of 126 boys who wrote the Physical Sciences paper, nearly a third achieved 80% or more, with close to 70% achieving 60% or higher. This is especially pleasing as 83% of our students opted for Physical Sciences.

Ninety-nine percent of the St John’s College Class of 2020 achieved at least 60% in English, with 32% of the class achieving at least 80% in English.

“While we celebrate these top achievers, we also recognise all of the young men who worked incredibly hard to achieve their personal best in their final examinations.”
