St John's College

St John's College is pleased to present the 18th St John’s College Basketball Tournament, brought to you by MTN from 23 to 26 February 2023, a highlight on the boys’ school basketball calendar for the past 18 years.

The competition format includes a round-robin phase with top sides going on to play in the knockout stages and 54 participating teams across the U19, U15 and U13 age-group categories.

Over the four days, there is plenty of exciting court-side action to look forward to. The Tournament features local schools and inter-provincial teams from the Eastern Cape, Free State, Kwazulu Natal and Western Cape, and neighbouring countries Eswatini and Zimbabwe.

This four-day event promises loads of fun for the whole family with food vendors providing plenty to eat and drink, a bar that will be open from 10h00 until 18h00 and two MTN Chill Out Lounges – one for the adults and one for the kids. Please remember that St John's is a cashless venue.

We will also live-stream the games from five of our courts to our fans across South Africa and worldwide through our partnership with SuperSport Schools. The SuperSport Schools app is available for download in the iOS and Google Play stores free of charge.

“We are delighted to be inviting some of our great South African schools to compete in this premier boys’ school basketball tournament,” says Mr Stuart West, Executive Headmaster at St John’s College.

“There are many valuable character-building lessons to be learned on the courts — passion, commitment, hard work, perseverance and dealing with success or disappointment graciously. We encourage our players to commit to good sportsmanship and fair play throughout the Tournament as we celebrate the new friendships made this weekend as we engage in keen competition and healthy rivalry.”

Tournaments of this nature would not be possible without the support of our sponsors. St John’s College is proud of our partnership with MTN, a brand conscious of the value that sport adds to our communities.

“The Basketball Committee has worked tirelessly in planning this event, and I would like to thank the Chairman of the Parents’ Basketball Committee, Mr Jameson Hlongwane and his team of parents for their enormous effort in supporting basketball at St John’s College. I would also like to thank our staff for their time, expertise and commitment to the tournament,” said Mr West.

We wish the players, coaches, managers, officials, and spectators – at the courts or home – a terrific weekend of competitive basketball. We trust our boys will build many friendships, hone their skills, and compete keenly on the court.

We look forward to seeing you at the courts. And, if you can’t make it to the games, download the SuperSport Schools app to enjoy them live from wherever you are.
