St John’s College has returned yet another exceptional set of matric results, with the Class of 2022 achieving a 100% pass rate and a 100% Bachelor Degree Pass.

“We salute the Matric Class of 2022 on their truly outstanding results, and while we celebrate our many top achievers, we also recognise and applaud every matric who worked incredibly hard to achieve their personal best,” said Stuart West, Executive Headmaster, St John’s College. “This speaks to the resilience, habits of excellence and structured academic confidence that each of our matrics embraced to achieve these remarkable results. Six students - Matthew Pryce, Sebastian Bouilliart, Khelan Desai, Ruhil Gosai, James Hind and Thomas Kruger - are included on the IEB Outstanding Achievements list, achieving within the top 5% of candidates in six or more subjects, including Life Orientation.

A further seven students - Matthew Botha, Antoine Coche, Matthew McJannet, Darren Peng, Stuart Phipson, Jonathan Stagman and Ruben van Zyl - featured on the IEB Commendable Achievements list, each achieving within the top 5% in five subjects, including a distinction for Life Orientation.

“It is wonderful to see that 11% of the students have been recognised as top achievers on the Commendable and Outstanding achievements lists by the IEB, with 43 students achieving subject results placed in the top 1% of all IEB candidates in South Africa,” said Dr Colleen Henning, Deputy Head: Academics, St John’s College.

Sebastian Bouilliart, Khelan Desai, Stuart Phipson and Jonathan Stagman are also commended for achieving 99% in their mathematics examinations. In Dramatic Arts, Joss Theophanous achieved 99% and Ben Scott-King 98%.

St John’s College offers three additional subjects - Further Studies Mathematics, English and Physics - under the IEB International Secondary Certificate (ISC) benchmarked by Universities South Africa (USAf). Sebastian Bouilliart and Ruhil Gosai featured in the top 1% of candidates for Further Studies Mathematics, with Sebastian achieving 100% in Calculus and Algebra and Ruhil Gosai 100% in the elective Graph Theory and Matrices. 18 students achieved distinctions [for Further Studies subjects], with six achieving more than 90%.

“The St John’s College results are phenomenal and a testament to our committed and inspiring staff and the dedication of our young men to achieving excellence,” says Dr Colleen Henning.

The Class of 2022 achieved 382 distinctions (80%+), with one-third over 90%.

Of the 122 students who wrote the matric exams, 11 achieved an average of 90% and above (9% of the class). An average of at least 80% was achieved by 46 boys (38% of the group), while 64 boys (52% of the class) achieved at least 75%. Their names will be etched into the walls of Big School.

A total of 86 boys achieved an average of 70% and above (70.5% of the grade), and 120 boys (98.4% of the grade) achieved 60% and above.

Our English students earned an overall average of 77%. We are delighted that 86% wrote Mathematics and 78% of the students wrote Physical Sciences - a significant uptake of these two subjects. The average for Mathematics was 77%, and for Physical Sciences, the class achieved a 70% average.

Other subjects that returned excellent results with overall averages of 75% or more included Dramatic Arts (89%), French Second Additional Language (87%), German Second Additional Language (85% Information Technology (81%), Life Orientation (76%), Visual Arts (77%) and Further Studies English (77%).

“I would like to thank our academic staff from St John’s Bridge Nursery School to the College, who have all played a significant role in developing the habits of excellence in these young men. Their incisive academic professionalism, creativity and nurturing care provided the firm foundation from which our Matriculants have soared like the majestic eagles they are!” said Mr Stuart West.

Sebastian Bouilliart, Dux Scholar, achieved an average of 96.4% and eight distinctions (Afrikaans First Additional Language, English Home Language, French Second Additional Language, History, Life Orientation, Mathematics and Physical Sciences, as well as Further Studies Mathematics Extended).

Ruhil Gosai achieved an average of 93.5% with nine distinctions (English Home Language, History, Information Technology, isiZulu First Additional Language, Life Orientation, Mathematics and Physical Sciences, as well as Further Studies Mathematics Extended and Further Studies English).

Khelan Desai achieved an average of 93.4% with eight distinctions (Afrikaans First Additional Language, English Home Language, Information Technology, Life Orientation, Life Sciences, Mathematics and Physical Sciences, as well as Further Studies Mathematics Extended).

Thomas Kruger achieved an average of 92.7% and eight distinctions (Afrikaans FAL, English Home Language, History, Information Technology, Life Orientation, Mathematics and Physical Sciences, as well as Further Studies Mathematics Extended.)

Matthew Pryce achieved an average of 91.6% with seven distinctions (Afrikaans FAL, English Home Language, Geography, Information Technology, Life Orientation, Mathematics and Physical Sciences).

Matthew Botha achieved an average of 91.2% with eight distinctions (Afrikaans First Additional Language, English Home Language, Geography, History, Life Orientation, Mathematics, and Physical Sciences, as well as Further Studies Mathematics Extended).

Jonathan Stagman achieved an average of 91.1% and eight distinctions (Afrikaans First Additional Language, English Home Language, German Second Additional Language, Information Technology, Life Orientation, Mathematics and Physical Sciences, as well as Further Studies Mathematics Extended).

Ruben van Zyl achieved an average of 90.8% and seven distinctions (Afrikaans First Additional Language, Dramatic Arts, English Home Language, Life Orientation, Life Sciences, Mathematics and Physical Sciences).

Fei Xiang ‘Darren’ Peng achieved an average of 90.4% and eight distinctions (Afrikaans First Additional Language, English Home Language, History, Information Technology, Life Orientation, Mathematics and Physical Sciences, as well as Further Studies Mathematics Extended).

Zeyn Mahomed achieved an average of 90.2% and seven distinctions (Afrikaans FAL, English Home Language, Information Technology, Life Orientation, Life Sciences, Mathematics and Physical Sciences, as well as Further Studies Mathematics Extended).
