St John's College was privileged to join US comedian and box office powerhouse Mr Kevin Hart at partner school Masibambane College on Friday 17 February, when he visited South Africa as part of his worldwide tour.

Khumo Khumalo (Student Affairs) and Lili Spinazze (UVI Runge) were among the students who shared the stage with the global icon to discuss social cohesion.

In his address, Mr Hart told the students they are part of the future and will be a part of the change. This message resonated with Mr Allan Magubane, Deputy Head: Transformation & Community Engagement, who marked this event as monumental in the imperative of social cohesion. "Social cohesion describes the condition of a truly sophisticated society. It is an ideal to strive towards for the sake of our children," he said.

When Jams Urdang, CEO and Founder of Education Africa, a Johannesburg-based NPO, heard that Kevin Hart was visiting, he wanted to share the experience with the schools within the Orange Farm community. And as a partner school, the St John's College matrics and Sixth Form students were also invited to attend.

The students at Masibambane that morning had no idea that Mr Hart would appear on the day. "It was such a privilege to share the stage with Kevin Hart. It’s made me realize that he is just as human as we are," said Khumalo.

In his closing comments, Mr Hart urged students to become groundbreakers and world changers – because they are the next generation. "My experience with Kevin Hart was exceptionally humbling because it made me realise that although he is hugely famous and successful, he's just a normal person, like anyone else. It gave me perspective on what success means and what type of success I aspire to," said Spinazze.
