St John's College

Promising young College golfer Jayden Hoskins (LV Hill) has shown remarkable talent from an early age. Introduced to golf by his parents at the tender age of six, Jayden quickly made his mark on the South African Kids' circuit. His parents' encouragement played a significant role in nurturing his passion for the sport. "Their continuous nagging to go to the driving range sparked the passion I have for the game today," Jayden recalls.

Currently playing off a +4.3 handicap, Jayden stands out as the only junior golfer from South Africa to receive a scholarship to the Congaree Global Golf Initiative (CGGI) Golf Clinic, which will take place at Archerfield Links in North Berwick, Scotland, from 4 to 6 August. The Congaree Foundation has also offered him a fully financed four-year USA University Golf Scholarship after he completes his matric.

This prestigious opportunity is a significant step toward Jayden's dream of becoming a professional golfer. "Being selected for the programme is a testament to how capable I am to compete with the best. I am overjoyed to receive this opportunity to enhance my golf skills and to get a world-class education in the upcoming years," he says.

As Jayden jets off to Scotland, he will join over 170 CGGI students from around the world, all united by their passion for golf. He is eager to meet fellow golf enthusiasts and experience the renowned courses where the game of golf, as we know it, was born. "I am excited to immerse myself in the Scottish traditions and the rich history of golf. This programme will not only allow me to showcase my skills on a global stage but gain confidence and attract the attention of scouts, coaches, and sponsors, opening doors to future opportunities," he says.

Jayden's golfing journey has been marked by several notable moments. In 2017, he had an unexpected experience when he was accidentally hit by a golf ball struck by Rory McIlroy at the BMW SA Open. Rory signed a glove for him with a note saying, "Get well soon," turning a painful moment into a cherished memory. More recently, during a student exchange programme in Australia in 2023, Jayden won a golf tournament, shooting an impressive 66 at the challenging Sea View Golf Course in Western Australia. He competed in the Zimbabwe Junior Open, where he finished third after leading on the first day. This achievement was a highlight, and he expressed gratitude to his sponsor, Shane Philips, for making it possible for him to compete in the event. "I appreciate his belief in me, his support does not go unnoticed," said Jayden.

Jayden is grateful for the support from Michael Faasen and the Central Gauteng Golf Union, whose recommendation letters were instrumental in securing his CGGI opportunity. "Michael Faasen and the Central Gauteng Golf Union played a pivotal role in my successful nomination for CGGI, and I am deeply grateful for their unwavering assistance and commitment to my development as a golfer."

Looking ahead to his four-year USA University Golf Scholarship, Jayden plans to balance academics and athletics with dedication. He aims to maintain a disciplined schedule, stay positive, and seize every opportunity that comes his way. "I plan to create a detailed schedule that allocates specific times for both academics and golf practice, ensuring that I give my best effort to each. I will prioritise tasks and set clear goals, breaking them down into manageable steps to stay on track," he explains.

Inspired by Tiger Woods's work ethic and mental resilience, as well as Jordan Spieth's passion and sportsmanship, Jayden advises aspiring golfers to stay dedicated, set realistic goals, improve their fitness, and enjoy the journey while remaining humble and grateful. Once he has graduated, his ultimate goal is to turn professional and compete on prestigious tours like the PGA Tour, European Tour, or DP World Tour.

As Jayden embarks on this exciting journey, carrying the pride of St John's College in his heart, we wish him all the best. From Africa to the world!
