St John's College

St John’s College is proud to announce the outstanding final-year results of the Matric Class of 2023, with a 100% pass rate.

“We salute the Matric Class of 2023 on their truly outstanding results, and while we celebrate our many top achievers, we also recognise and applaud every matric who worked incredibly hard to achieve their personal best. This speaks to the resilience, habits of excellence and structured academic confidence that each of our matrics embraced to achieve these remarkable results.

Credit must go to our world-class academic staff - from the Bridge Nursery School to the College - for their dedication to their students. They have nurtured these young men through their personal and academic development and contributed significantly to these results. They have instilled in their students a culture of curiosity and critical thinking that is commendable.” — Mr Stuart West, Executive Headmaster

Julian Kuni, Nicholas Meyer, and Alexander Tafur are the joint Dux Scholars with an overall average of 96% in their final examinations.

Julian Kuni, who achieved 10 distinctions, says he believes that part of his success is owed to the teachers who created a desire to learn about the subjects at hand. “It is only when you’re truly interested in your subject that you learn and see that learning can be enjoyable.”

Kuni spent some time in his school career tutoring St John’s College Academy students, and he applied this insight to his own teachings. He says this experience was one of the most impactful experiences at St John’s College. “I gained a deep understanding of how to help people and try to try and view things from their perspective.”

Nicholas Meyer, who achieved eight distinctions, says the highlight of his school career was being awarded the Peter Baker Prize for the Dux Scholar (shared with Alexander Tafur) at the Matric Prize Giving last year. “Our group has always been competitive and academically driven. I’m glad I was able to maintain my academic rigour throughout the years and achieve this award.”

He says that in addition to having teachers who present the curriculum in a thought-provoking manner, ongoing practice and doing past papers are two effective strategies that helped him achieve the top academic spot.

Alexander Tafur, who achieved eight distinctions, says his education at St John’s College helped him realise the best form of education is one that allows students to build on both their character as well as their knowledge.

“For the longest time, I had labelled myself an academic, but St John’s allowed me to be so much more than that. I was given the opportunity and freedom to become a leader, sportsman, public speaker, committee member, and, perhaps most importantly, a peer and friend to many brilliant young men and women in the St John’s community. St John's has taught me that resilience, perseverance, and confidence are equally if not more important than knowing how to solve an equation,” he says.

Executive Headmaster Stuart West congratulates the students and their dedicated teachers. “It’s been an honour working with these young men this past year. These outstanding results across the board speak for themselves. This is all from a 2023 matric class which proudly led the College, in our 125th year, with spirit, tenacity and joy to great heights on the sports field and in Drama, Music, Art and Debating, once again securing our cherished St John’s College heritage of all-round excellence."

St John's College remains committed to providing a world-class education that empowers students to reach their full potential, and the Class of 2023 has exemplified this commitment.

Congratulations to our young men and their teachers as we celebrate another year in the legacy of academic excellence.
