St John's College

The New Boys' Induction Service on Friday 17 January 2025 was a special occasion for our new boys and their families. In his address, Mr Stuart West, Executive Headmaster, extended a warm welcome to the boys.

"It is an honour to have you here as our new Johannians to begin your exciting journey at St John’s College. Parents – thank you for joining us this evening to mark this important rite of passage.

Entering the College is a significant step in a young boy’s life. Tonight marks the beginning of an extraordinary chapter—a new start for each of you. Your St John’s journey is a bold opportunity to discover your passions, explore new interests, and begin shaping the remarkable young man you aspire to be.

St John’s College is uniquely designed for boys like you—a place where you will thrive across our rich academic, sporting, cultural, leadership, and service programmes. These years ahead are about becoming a Johannian, a young man rightly trained in body, mind, and character, ready to step confidently into the world beyond our gates.

Outside this Chapel, in the David Quad, stands a statue of young David—a replica of Verrocchio’s masterpiece from Renaissance Florence. I encourage you to pause and reflect on this statue the next time you walk by. David’s story is one of developing the faith, courage, and sense of purpose that enabled him to face challenges, conquer giants, and transform a nation.

His story is also your story. Here at St John’s, you will find your confidence, your sense of purpose, and the strength to rise to life’s challenges and make your mark on the world.

At St John’s, we expect every boy to greet people in a confident and engaging way—from the security guards and ground staff to your teachers, coaches, and visitors. These small acts of respect—saying "I see you"—reflect the values of who we are as Johannians.

St John’s College is a place of immense tradition and unparalleled beauty. You are surrounded by a rich history and a sacredness that few schools can claim. It is one of the most inspiring environments in which to learn, perform, play, and grow. Let this magnificent campus ignite your light—your curiosity, creativity, and passions.

Each day here is an opportunity to develop habits of excellence. Every lesson, practice, or activity is a chance to strive to be the best version of yourself. Remember, the more you invest in these next five years, the more you will gain in return.

In this Chapel, where your journey begins tonight, is the spiritual heart of St John's. In a few short years, it will also be where your journey culminates at your Valedictory Service.

You will spend many moments here between now and then—moments of reflection, inspiration, and growth. Let this chapel daily remind you of the light, life, and love of God that will guide you through your time at St John’s.

In a few moments, you will receive a certificate with your name and the School Prayer—a prayer that encapsulates everything we hope for you during your time here. I keep a copy of this prayer on my office wall, and it inspires me every day. I hope it will become a source of inspiration for you as well.

Boys, your teachers, tutors, and coaches will open doors for you, but it is up to you to walk through them with commitment and determination. As experience has taught us, a busy boy is a happy boy.

Parents, thank you for entrusting your sons to us. We are committed to nurturing, challenging, and supporting them on their journey to becoming young men of character and purpose—of which you would be proud.

On behalf of us all, I welcome each new student and their parents and families to the St John’s College family." - Excerpt from Mr Stuart West's address at the New Boys' Induction Service
