The highly anticipated 2025 St John’s College Basketball Tournament, brought to you by Standard Bank, has concluded after an action-packed four days filled with intense competition, energy, and unforgettable moments at the biggest boys’ school basketball tournament in Southern Africa.

The tournament, which ran from 20 to 23 February, featured an impressive lineup of 62 teams from Gauteng, Eastern Cape, Free State, and KwaZulu-Natal, as well as from neighbouring Zimbabwe. Despite early challenges posed by heavy summer Highveld rains, forcing some matches to be relocated to indoor venues across Johannesburg, the tournament returned to the St John’s College courts on Friday, where the atmosphere reached fever pitch as the competition progressed.

“It has been a truly exceptional tournament, and while the rain presented us with some logistical hurdles at the start, we were thrilled to bring the action back to our courts,” said Stuart West, St John’s College Executive Headmaster. “The camaraderie, sportsmanship, and competitive spirit displayed throughout the tournament highlight the power of sport to bring people together. We are incredibly proud of all the teams who participated and congratulate the U15 and U19 winners, Maritzburg College and Northwood School from Kwazulu Natal.”

Master in Charge of Basketball and Tournament Director Clemen Kock reflected on the weekend's showpiece. “Basketball truly took centre stage this weekend at St John’s College in Houghton. It was a privilege to provide such an incredible experience for players, coaches, and parents. Thank you to our school and everyone who made this possible — we look forward to raising the bar even higher next year.”

The U15 and U19 teams battled fiercely through the group stages, while the U13 category enjoyed a festival format focused purely on participation and the love of the game. The finals saw yet another electrifying showdown between Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal teams, showcasing the strength of schoolboy basketball in these provinces.

Tony Johnson, Master in Charge of Basketball at St John’s Preparatory, added, “It’s been fantastic for our young boys to be part of this event. It has been amazing to see boys in the older age groups that once participated in the U13 division returning as giants to motivate our younger boys for the future.”

The Basketball Village was alive with activity throughout the tournament, featuring a variety of food vendors, merchandise stalls, and entertainment that created an incredible atmosphere for players and spectators alike.

Standard Bank, the tournament’s headline sponsor, emphasised the significance of supporting youth sports. “At Standard Bank, we believe in backing young talent and providing platforms where their skills can be nurtured and celebrated. This tournament is a testament to the talent and determination of these young athletes, and we are proud to be part of this incredible event,” said Tshiamo Molanda, Head, Youth and Mass Market PPB SA, Standard Bank.

Tournaments of this magnitude would not be possible without the unwavering support of our partners. Thank you to Standard Bank for their commitment to school basketball, our media partners, SuperSport Schools and YFM, and all our other sponsors who played a crucial role in making this event a resounding success.

“We’re passionate about empowering young talent and celebrating the energy of the next generation. Partnering with the St John’s College Basketball Tournament aligns with our commitment to youth culture, sports, and excellence,” said Haseena Cassim, Managing Director, YFM
