St John's College

St John’s College proudly hosted the MIT Africa/ISASA Mathematics & Science Seminar from 5 to 10 January, welcoming 106 students from 44 schools across South Africa and Eswatini. This flagship programme, themed Technical Topics in Quantum Mechanics, was enriched by the presence of nine MIT students, who brought their expertise to inspire the next generation of scientists and mathematicians.

The seminar delved into advanced topics such as Nuclear Physics, Particle Physics, Quantum Theory, and Quantum Technology. Students also explored complex mathematical concepts like matrices, integrals, and differentiation through engaging lectures and workshops. The week culminated in a final presentation, where students showcased their newfound knowledge and insights.

Reflecting on the programme, Physical Sciences teacher Jeremy Naidoo shared: “Our African students are phenomenal. Their curiosity and diligence consistently blow my mind. By the end of the week, they often realise that they, too, could be pursuing studies at institutions like MIT in the near future.”

The programme encouraged meaningful interactions, with the MIT students commending participants for their eagerness to learn and spirited discussions, which often extended into the evenings. “The St John’s boys made it cool to be smart,” said one of the MIT students.

As another seminar wraps up, this partnership leaves a lasting mark on the students, inspiring them to pursue ambitious academic and career goals.
