St John’s College celebrates the exceptional achievements of its Matric Class of 2024 in the Independent Examinations Board (IEB) examinations. All 125 students contributed to our 100% tertiary pass rate, with 124 securing Bachelor's Degree passes.
"The Class of 2024 holds a special place in my heart, as we began our journeys at St John’s together five years ago," said Stuart West, Executive Headmaster.
"Through challenges and triumphs, including the shadow of the pandemic, the Class of 2024 reclaimed the fullness of College life with spirit, tenacity, and joy while striving for the highest academic standards. It has been an honour to witness their growth and leadership.
We celebrate each matriculant for upholding our cherished heritage of academic excellence. These results are a reflection of the quality, commitment, and expertise of our teachers, the dedication of our students, and the enriching academic environment that prepares young minds for success in all areas of life."

Within the new IEB International Secondary Certificate, St John's College offers Further Studies in English, Mathematics and Physics.
- 28 students achieved distinctions in the Further Studies subjects, including 24 students with distinctions in Further Studies Mathematics (63% of candidates).
IEB Recognition
Three students were placed on the IEB Outstanding Achievement list.
One student was placed on the IEB Commendable Achievement list.
16 subject results were placed in the top 1% of all IEB candidates in South Africa.
Dr Gabrielle Wills, a senior researcher at Stellenbosch University, emphasises the critical role of STEM results at the Matric level. She highlights a decline in the uptake of Mathematics (from 53% in 2008 to 38.5% in 2023) and Physical Science (from 38.6% to 29.7% over the same period). Dr Wills stresses the urgency of improving performance in these subjects, as they are key predictors of academic readiness for university success.

The Class of 2024 achieved remarkable success in STEM subjects
In Mathematics, we had an 86% student uptake, significantly higher than the IEB average of 58%, and our students achieved a Maths average of 77%, outperforming the IEB average by 11%.
Two-thirds of our Matrics took Physical Sciences, compared to IEB school's average of 37%, and our students achieved a subject average of 69%, 8% above the IEB average.
70% of our students opted for Life Sciences, achieving an impressive average of 73%, 6% above the IEB average.
A quarter of our students are now taking Information Technology as a subject, and averaged 78% in comparison to the IEB average of 71%.
In addition, St John's is committed to a holistic Humanities offering, and once again, we celebrate outstanding achievements by our Matrics in the Humanities and Arts subjects.
In English, our students achieved an average of 77%, 7% above the IEB average.
In Dramatic Arts, 32 students achieved an exceptional subject average of 88%, demonstrating excellence in our performing arts.
In History, 84 students achieved an average of 79% (the IEB was 70%)
French Department achieved an 86% average, 10% above the IEB average.
The Music Department boasts an 85% average among our Music students, highlighting the excellence of St John's College Music.
By excelling across STEM and Humanities subjects, the Class of 2024 emerges with a world-class education that has prepared them for access to and success in the top academic institutions in South Africa and worldwide.
This is all from a 2024 matric class which led the College with spirit, tenacity and joy to great heights in sports, Drama, Music, Art and Debating, securing our cherished St John's heritage of all-around excellence.
It’s been an honour working with these young men this past year. While we celebrate many top achievers, we recognise and celebrate every matric who worked incredibly hard to achieve their personal best in their final results. The marks across the board speak for themselves.
