On the evenings of 9 and 10 July, 160 voices of the Chapel Choir, supported by an orchestra of 19 players, raised the roof with Antonio Vivaldi’s Gloria.
Joined by soloists Kate Watson (soprano) and Aukse Trinkunas (alto), and conducted by Cameron Upchurch, Head of Chapel Music, the choir really showed its mettle. From the youngest singer in Upper II to the seniors in Upper V and Upper VI, the choir’s many hours of preparation paid off. “I am very proud of every member of the choir for their commitment to rehearsals and their discipline in their performance. Both contributed to joyful, spirited music-making,” said Mr Upchurch.
The orchestra comprised the current string ensemble, augmented by some of our full-time and peripatetic music staff as well as Old Johannians, making this a truly Johannian community event. The Gloria was preceded by a concertino by Telemann, with Isabella Bonnet (violin) and Alexander Urban (trumpet) as soloists.
Encouraged by two packed audiences, the choir and players delivered an evening of music that will be remembered for a long time to come.
