St John's College

As students of St John's College, we wanted to take this moment to say thank you.

Over the past couple of weeks, we have asked students across the school to write letters to their teachers on behalf of their classes. But we quickly realised that while our teachers are pivotal to our experience at St John's, there are many dedicated contributors who work quietly in offices, behind desks, away from the daily engagement of the student body. We walk the halls of St John's, experiencing its privilege and majesty, but at the heart of that world-class experience lie all those who dedicate themselves every day to ensure we have the best possible time here.

This letter is therefore addressed to the greater St John's community, to everyone who makes this place what it is.

In my most recent conversation with our Executive Headmaster-elect, Mr Dale Jackson, he reminded me that the mission and vision of St. John's College is to serve its students. This vision is the key focus for every staff member and contributor to the St John's family. We are deeply grateful for all that has been done for us, even when we have not explicitly seen it.

One of the most profound things I have heard is that "leadership recognised is leadership created." When we acknowledge the work of those who serve us, we honour the leadership they have shown. You have all individually led St John's in many ways. You have shaped St John's and all it has become. For over 127 years, we have remained at the pinnacle, recognised as a world-class institution. That status is a product of your generosity, devotion and selflessness.

We hope that these letters are the recognition you deserve.

But ultimately, I don't think we can encapsulate your impact on us in a single page. Your impact extends far beyond our comprehension. Our identities are shaped during our time embracing this wondrous institution. You have had a direct contribution to that, and we are indebted to you. In my Head of School application letter, I expressed that every student and staff member at St John's is the air, the energy and the wings that keep our eagle flying high. The eagle represents all we aspire to—the perseverance of our forefathers, the tenacity of all those who have felt the warm embrace of the St John's family over our 127-year legacy, and the excellence embodied in an eagle that soars high and gazes upon the world as a vessel of possibility.

This year we have risen high, and now we look back at what has been achieved, gazing upon the fruits of our labour. In all that St John's is and has become, we see a reflection of your efforts. You have etched your contribution into the very foundations of our College.

Today, on Teacher's Day and during this Teacher Appreciation Month, from all of us students, we express our immense gratitude to everyone who has made St John's what it is. May God bless you eternally and grant you your heart's desires.

Thank you, thank you, thank you. — Siza Gule, Head of School 2025
