As we celebrate 125 years of academic excellence at St John's College, we remain acutely aware of our role in promoting the transformation of our society through education. We recognise the importance of continuously sharpening and improving what we offer students and playing an active role in our broader community's development, improvement, and success.
Through regular engagement with the Heads of our partner schools, we understand the challenges faced by students in our precinct and the type of interventions needed to support our community in meaningful ways. Since the Covid pandemic, the Academy programme has been enhanced to include extracurricular activities and sports to meet the holistic development needs of students, compromised by lockdown restrictions.
This year we are proud to introduce a new Grade 9 Maths Enrichment Programme at partner schools Barnato Park High School and Highlands North Boys’ High School. Our St John’s College teachers facilitate this programme with the support of our teacher interns. The programme will serve more than 60 students by further supporting and developing their Mathematics skills.
“The Grade 9 year is crucial in the South African educational journey. We believe that improving Maths results at this stage will improve overall confidence in the subject and motivate students to select subjects that will ultimately shape their careers,” said Mr Mickey Mashego, Head of Community Engagement.
We are excited to embark on this new project which will take the total number of students who benefit from this programme to well over 150 across the Prep and College Academies.
Without continual growth and progress, such words as improvement, achievement, and success have no meaning.
The St John’s College Academy programme has enriched the educational experiences of hundreds of deserving students from our neighbouring schools for more than 15 years by providing access to our world-class facilities and expertise. Many Academy graduates have pursued careers in engineering, medicine, information technology and finance. The Matric Class of 2022 further emphasised the success of the Academy programme by posting an impressive total of 33 distinctions!
