St John’s College is a world-class Christian, African school situated on a historic campus in Houghton, Johannesburg, offering quality education from Nursery School to Sixth Form. The school has an outstanding academic record and has a fine reputation in sport, music, drama and debating.

St John’s College seeks to appoint an individual from May 2020 who demonstrates:

  • a love of English and enthusiastically shares his/her passion with his/her students
  • a belief in the potential of his/her students, and who sees them as active participants in learning
  • excellent content knowledge of English literature and language
  • a commitment to his/her own lifelong learning
  • an ability to produce high quality assessments and analysis of student peformance
  • a willingness to take on extra responsibilities within the department as required by the Head of English

Responsibilities include teaching a range of English classes as well as involvement in co-curricular and pastoral duties within the school. Members of staff are expected to support the Christian ethos of the school.

The successful candidate will be able to work well within a team. S/he should be computer literate and make appropriate use of ICT within lessons. S/he will be someone with a real enthusiasm for this popular subject who is able to motivate and challenge our articulate and questioning students. We are looking for a person with vision, drive and sound judgement.

Minimum requirement

A Bachelor’s Degree in English or similar degree

Five years English Home Language teaching experience at high school level

SACE registered

Desirable attributes

Honours or Masters degree in English

Experience in teaching literature and language at Cambridge (CIE) AS and A2 levels

Familiar with the demands of Cambridge and/or IEB curricula
