St John's College

Afrikaans is introduced in the Grade 0 year and at the end of Grade Three parents and pupils make the decision of taking either Afrikaans or isiZulu as their First Additional Language. The other language is then taken as a conversational option.

Afrikaans has a rich heritage of literature and learning and teaching is linked through songs to the musical tradition of the school. Boys are encouraged to embrace the cultural heritage of South Africa by learning to speak, to write and to enjoy the poetry and literature of this descriptive language.
