St John's College

isiZulu is in the Grade 0 year and at the end of Grade Three parents and pupils make the decision of taking either isiZulu or Afrikaans as the First Additional Language. The other is then taken as the conversational option.

There is a strong emphasis on teaching cultural and historic elements in isiZulu. The programme aims to be innovative and to integrate wherever possible with other areas of the curriculum. Gum boot dancing and traditional isiZulu dancing are particularly enjoyed by boys. Every year the various grades take part in the isiZulu Cultural Festival,  take a trip to Babanango in KwaZulu-Natal and visit traditional homesteads as well as the Anglo-Zulu battlefields.
